Luthra and Luthra Law Offices, Interlaw’s partner firm in India, has advised the United States Consulate General Mumbai on the sale of its American Center property to the House of Abhinandan Lodha real estate group.

The case included performing due diligence, investigating possible tax implications, as well as advising on the entire bidding process and drafting bidding memorandum. The firm also helped the consulate prepare sale documents and complete the registration of the real estate transfer with the authorities.

Commenting on the significance of the property, US Consulate Mumbai spokesperson Greg Pardo said: “Built in 1968, the American Center in Mumbai has long served as a cornerstone of US-India relations. Over the years, the property housed key institutions including the American Library, the US-India Educational Foundation, the US Foreign Commercial Service, and the press and cultural affairs offices. For generations, the American Center played a vital role in fostering US-India people-to-people connections and advancing US-India commercial and cultural ties.”

The transaction was led by partner Vaibhav Suri and managing associate Manjul Mantri, with partner Sanjeev Sachdeva and senior associate Nikhil Kapoor advising on taxation implications and exemptions, and partner Rubal Bansal advising on income tax. Partners Harish Kuma, Itee Singhal and managing associate Aman Nijhawan advised on the Indian Ministry of External Affairs’ approval process.
